Forensic Mental Health Evaluations for Trauma and Psychological Injury

Making the Invisible Visible

Traumatic events—including car accidents, slip-and-fall incidents, motorcycle collisions, and traumatic loss—can significantly affect a person’s mental health. Clients may experience anxiety, depression, difficulty regulating emotions, changes in attention and concentration, nightmares, intrusive memories, and disruptions in motivation and sleep. These effects can alter their ability to work, maintain relationships, and manage everyday life.

Focus Forward Therapy & Coaching provides comprehensive forensic mental health evaluations for personal injury, wrongful death, and other legal matters involving trauma and psychological harm. Each evaluation examines the individual’s history, reported symptoms, and changes in daily functioning, including the relationship between those symptoms and the event being evaluated.

Our evaluations provide evidence-based, clinically grounded documentation of diagnostic findings, functional limitations, and treatment needs—giving attorneys a more complete understanding of their client’s injuries and informing case strategy and damages discussions. Treatment for trauma-related concerns is also available when clinically indicated.

The Compensation Gap in Personal Injury Cases

Personal injury cases are often built on what can be seen, measured, and imaged. Orthopedic injuries, surgical records, diagnostic imaging, and physical therapy notes typically form the foundation of a claim — and once physical treatment concludes, many cases move quickly toward resolution.

For many clients, however, recovery doesn't end there.

Psychological trauma can persist long after physical injuries have healed. Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms, sleep disruption, cognitive changes, emotional dysregulation, and avoidance behaviors may continue to affect daily functioning, work capacity, and relationships. When these injuries go unevaluated and undocumented, they become difficult to establish — and even more difficult to value.

For attorneys, this is more than a clinical oversight. It can represent compensable harm left unclaimed, even where psychological injury is recoverable under applicable law.

Timely, structured evaluation helps close this gap. A comprehensive forensic psychological evaluation translates reported symptoms and functional limitations into clear clinical documentation — supporting damages analysis, strengthening case valuation, and contributing to a more complete picture of the client's overall injury.

Psychological Trauma Doesn't End When Physical Treatment Does

Motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle crashes, slip-and-fall incidents, and other traumatic events affect more than the body. Even after physical injuries resolve, the nervous system can remain in a prolonged state of heightened threat response.

Clients often report simply "feeling off" without being able to explain why. Others minimize emotional symptoms, assuming they'll resolve on their own or are something to push through. Common post-traumatic symptoms include:

  • Difficulty regulating mood and emotion

  • Persistent anxiety or fear, including avoidance of driving or public spaces

  • Nightmares, intrusive thoughts, or flashbacks

  • Changes in sleep, appetite, motivation, or concentration

  • Memory difficulties and mental fatigue

  • Irritability, withdrawal, or emotional numbing

These symptoms can impair occupational performance, limit social engagement, and diminish overall quality of life. When left unassessed, they're often dismissed as ordinary stress or assumed to be temporary.

From a legal standpoint, unaddressed psychological symptoms are harder to substantiate and value without timely clinical documentation — and from a damages perspective, they risk being discounted or omitted entirely.
